The Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies officially launched the Catastrophic Risk series of teleconferences on February 25 with roundtable discussion, “Policy, Risk, and the Threat of an Electromagnetic Pulse,” featuring panelists Chuck Manto, Dr. George Baker, and discussant Dr. Robert McCreight.
The discussion highlighted the potential consequences a naturally-occurring or man-made EMP blast might have on the U.S., both on a national and local scale, as well as possible response plans to such an event. Although panelists agreed that the current state of EMP-preparedness in the U.S. is dramatically lacking, the consensus was that discussions like this were the first step in remedying a problem with grave outcomes.
