2016 European Union Innovation Teleconference with Robert Madelin Recap

On July 25th, The Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies held our 2016 European Union Innovation Teleconference featuring Robert Madelin, the Senior Adviser on Innovation to the President of the European Commission, who most recently has produced a report on innovation for the Commission (for full background, notes and references, click here). Below is a lightly-edited transcript of a teleconference, and should not be quoted without confirmation from the relevant participant. Robert was talking from his position as a senior member of the European Commission’s in-house think tank. Neil Armstrong’s Birthday

Today, August 5, is the birthday of the late Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

To commemorate that extraordinary achievement, and to lament the essential loss of nearly a half-century of American space prowess, we’re re-publishing below the C-PET tribute I wrote on August 25, 2012, the day he died.

As we persist in what is surely the most narcissistic election campaign in our lifetimes, and potentially the most consequent in the history of the Republic, it’s never been more important to recall America’s future-oriented global vision and its cosmological entailments. And, as we penny-pinch our spending, that there was one year in the mid-60s when NASA received almost 5% of the entire federal budget.

Neil Armstrong, thank you for your service.
